Thank you for writing in – please find the editor’s response below. He has asked me to say that we did explain that the island is Greek later in the article, but should have made that much clearer on the first two pages. Please could you also notify the people on your mailing list of our statement.

‘I’m sorry that our magazine feature titled “How about Turkey for Christmas?” created the impression that Kastelorizo might be a Turkish island. While the other destinations covered in the article are Turkish, I was aware and ensured we stated that Kastelorizo is Greek. With hindsight we could have made the nationality of the island even clearer. I apologise to anyone who felt offended by this. Our intent was entirely to help travellers discover some beautiful places to visit, including the Greek island of Kastelorizo, and this oversight came about during the hectic period of creating our first-ever issue. In our March issue (as our February issue has just gone to print) we will publish representative examples of the letters we’ve received with a clarification.’

Thanks for writing in - and sorry for any offence caused by the article in the first issue of the Lonely Planet magazine. We certainly didn't intend to mislead anyone reading the article about the true Greek nationality of Kastellorizo, or to offend anyone.

The editor will be including a clarification in the March issue of the magazine and in the meantime he's written this statement:

To Kαστελόριζο, η Τουρκία και το Lonely Planet

Το Καστελόριζο, Η Τουρκία και Το Lonely Planet-το περιοδικό του γνωστού τουριστικού οδηγού-προτείνει Χριστούγεννα στην Τουρκία,στο Καστελόριζο δηλαδή!

Μπέρδεμα;

Στο τεύχος Δεκεμβρίου 2008 του Lonely Planet στις σελίδες 14 & 15 υπάρχει τίτλος "Χριστούγεννα στην Τουρκία", και στην φωτογραφία που συνοδεύει το άρθρο το παραθαλάσσιο χωριουδάκι ήταν το Καστελόριζο. Πράγματι, η λεζάντα εξηγούσε πως πρόκειται για το Τουρκικό νησί Καστελόριζο. Το φοβερό ήταν πως στην ίδια τη φωτογραφία υπήρχαν όχι μία, αλλά δύο Ελληνικές σημαίες, πάνω σε σπίτια.
Δεν μπορώ να το θεωρήσω σαν ένα απλό λάθος, μια απλή παρεξήγηση. Δεν είναι ένας τυχαίος εξοστρακισμός της γεωγραφικής αλήθειας.
Αν δηλαδή το Lonely Planet δεν ξέρει σε ποια χώρα βρίσκονται τα νησιά για τα οποία γράφει, πράγμα κάπως βασικό, πώς να το εμπιστευτείς όταν σου προτείνει πού να πας φας, που να κοιμηθείς και όλα τα βασικά για κάποιον ταξιδιώτη ή...προβατοτουρίστα!

Μια...λογική εξήγηση θα ήταν πως οι άνθρωποι δεν έχουν ενημερωμένα αρχεία μια και το Καστελόριζο ενώθηκε με την Ελλάδα μόλις το 1947. Νομίζω ότι πριν ανήκε στην Αγγλία.

Ετσι λοιπόν μαινόμενος έστειλα το κάτωθι αγγλοσαξονικό κειμενάκι στα κάτωθι link:

I would like to protest against an article published in the lonely planet magazine in December 2008 entitled HOW ABOUT TURKEY FOR CHRISTMAS? http://cde.cerosmedia.com/1O492c2cec9ac45012.cde/page/14
In this article you present the Greek island of Kastellorizo as a turkish land falsely informing & guiding your readers.
You also deeply insulted my national feelings and identity as a native Greek citizen.
Μοreover noone noticed the Greel Flag on the main article photo. This cant be just a mistake from people who are experienced travellers.
Although im not a supscriber to your publications i also canceled my subscription to my satellite provider as i dont want to pay for feedback coming from your company (globe trekker on travel channel)
I demand a written correction published in a following paper & surely on the web regarding this matter.
I also informed people from my mailing list as well as my blog.
